about

This is the second song I wrote with Danny and S.E. Berrios while on my LA writing excursion. Like we did with 'Happy,' we talked at length before writing the song itself. We connected with each other through sharing our experiences with growing up. That there always seems to be some sort of existential challenge we battle as we navigate life.

I had had the verse chord progression for a long time, I didn’t know what to do with it. But those chords spoke to me the moment of their inception - they were heavy, melancholic, and intriguing. I also had some semblance of that melody too, but no words. Thankfully we were able to solve the puzzle together and put words to music.

The chorus came together off of that initial 'hey, yeah' chant instinct. I thought back to my childhood, spending summers at our neighborhood pool. I recalled how scary swimming in the deep end seemed... seeing the slow decline of the pool floor into the 12-foot abyss. When I treaded water in the deep end of the pool as a young boy, I remember feeling that sense of danger, that the only thing supporting me was my two legs, frantically kicking under the water.

This was also the second song we tracked at Trace Horse with our good friend and producer Kyle Dreaden. It was so raw... I played this old Jazzmaster that was so heavy... Every time I played the chords I could feel their weight. Growing Pains is straight from the heart, from all of our hearts, and I think one can feel that visceral emotion when listening to the record.

lyrics

I’ve been getting wasted ‘cause I’m bored
And all the clothes I can’t afford
They just end up on my floor
Another night another war
Me vs. my brain
No one to Blame
It seems like every other night
Is an existential crisis
But what ya got to lose when you’re broke and 22
I’m getting by
At least on the outside…

Hey, yeah
I’ve been swimming in the deep end
Can you tell that I’ve been sinking?
Can you tell me when the growing pains will go away?
‘Cause I’m not really sure how much longer
I can hold my breath under the water
Can you tell me when the growing pains will go away?

Yeah I lost my sense of home
And now every time I go back
I get so claustrophobic
I’m losing all my old friends
I’m tired…
So fuckin’ tired…

Hey, yeah
I’ve been swimming in the deep end
Can you tell that I’ve been sinking?
Can you tell me when the growing pains will go away?
‘Cause I’m not really sure how much longer
I can hold my breath under the water
Can you tell me when the growing pains will go away?

I’ll think about it when I’m sober
Wake me up when it’s all over

Hey yea… hey yea… hey yeaaaaa

Hey, yeah
I’ve been swimming in the deep end
Can you tell that I’ve been sinking?
Can you tell me when the growing pains will go away?
‘Cause I’m not really sure how much longer
I can hold my breath under the water
Can you tell me when the growing pains will go away?
