about

I wrote this song at my very talented friend Griffin Oskar's place in the hills in Los Angeles. It was my first time meeting him, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as I ascended into the winding hills of LA.

This song was one of those songs that just came out of nowhere, and when it arrived, it poured out of me. The chord progression of the verse is actually the old verse progression of 'Mundane.' Noah showed me the progression forever ago and it always stuck with me. I think the best way I can put what this song means to me is like this: It's a lot like a letter penned straight from the heart to an ex-love. For A While is a song that is very personal and I think that in respecting that, I won't go too deep into it here… or anywhere!

We recorded this song with Ben Cramer (Old Sea Brigade) at The Shoebox in Nashville. It was the second song we did after recording Mundane. This one was tough to nail down at first if memory serves. We tried a few different versions, even a very jazzy piano-laden one! I'm so happy with where the song ended up and I think that is a testament to our willingness to try different things until we land on something that we all feel speaks deeply to us.

Some of my favorite moments in the song to look out for:

--Noah's bass in the second verse, specifically at 1:17-1:23.
--Miles' drum transitions from verse to chorus. Notice how when he uses toms instead of cymbals, how he signals movements in the piece.
--Val's guitar at the end. 2:34 and on. WOW!
--The piano riff that comes in at the very end of the track is the same melody as the guitar that comes in in chorus two of 'What if I'm Happy.'
--The piano that comes in halfway through verse two.

lyrics

Couldn't find a way to say
I was hoping that you'd stay
So I'm holding my words, watching you walk away
I'm taking in LA
But I'm thinking of your face
I guess I was hoping you were a passing phase

But I'm so caught up
In what I'm so far from

All the lights and the cabs and the time that we had
Oh I
Won't try to fight it
All the truth and the lies and the time in denial
Oh I
Won't try to fight it

I won't make the same mistakes
I'll give you everything
I could be all you need
Just for awhile

Don't know much about your friends
And I wonder how you've been
Oh how does it feel to live inside of my head?
Was broken from the start
That's the hardest part
Oh what a weight to carry around
What a weight to carry now...

All the lights and the cabs and the time that we had
Oh I
Won't try to fight it
All the truth and the lies and the time in denial
Oh I
Won't try to fight it

I won't make the same mistakes
I'll give you everything
I could be all you need
Just for awhile
